7 Day Dog Sledding Trip - Norway

Imagine being surrounded by a frozen landscape 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle. You're on the back of a sled being pulled by Alaskan Huskies and all you can hear is the panting of the dogs and the crunching of the snow under the sled's runners. As you travel, the landscape changes from the open and windswept plains of ice and snow to scented coniferous forests. The tranquility and absolute silence of the Arctic is awesome. If you're lucky, you may meet a moose with her calf, an Arctic fox or even a wolf. You may even experience the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). Whatever you experience, and whenever you go, this will be a trip that will remain imprinted on your memory forever.
Extreme Element provides you with the unique chance to be a member of a team who will be given expert training in dog sledding. You will be instructed on how to handle your team of dogs and how to negotiate a sled through some of the most exceptional terrain on earth.

Agenda

The Itinerary:
Day 1 (Saturday) Leave London for colder climates:
Leave Heathrow and fly to the capital of Norway, Oslo. After a brief stop there you will connect on to Alta in the far North. You will be met at the airport by one of our guides and taken to the lodge at Gargia Fjellstue where you will receive a full expedition brief, and all the main items of equipment you will need. The evening is then yours to enjoy, perhaps watching the Northern Lights while sitting in an outdoors hot tub.
Day 2 (Sunday) Covering the mountain range of Beskades:
From the lodge you will be taken to the start of your dog sledding adventure. Today, we will head over the fantastic mountain range of Beskades and cover over 30 km of frozen landscape to Suolovuobme.
Day 3 (Monday) On to Masi:
This morning you leave Suolovuobme and head for Masi. Covering almost 30 km, you will travel across the most incredible landscape, finally arriving at Masi – a lodge perched on the edge of a frozen lake. This evening you will have to break through the ice the get the water you will need for your dogs.
Day 4 (Tuesday) Through Reindeer country:
Today, you will travel from Masi to Nedre Mollišjok covering about 35 km. This day is through reindeer country where extra care has to be taken to prevent the dogs chasing after these amazing, hardy creatures. An incredible sight to witness!
Day 5 (Wednesday) The largest frozen lake in the Arctic:
Between Nedre Mollišjok and Jotka (approximately 35 km) you will witness some of the starkest and most stunning landscapes you will see in this land. 10km of today’s route will be over the largest frozen lake in the Arctic.
Day 6 (Thursday) Through the forests into the lowlands:
Today you will travel from Jotka to Detsika, about 30 km. This final day of sledding will put your newfound sledding skills to the test as you descend through the magical forests to the end of the route. Once you have been collected at Detsika you will step into Norway’s Ice Hotel for a celebratory drink in the ice bar! After relaxing in an outdoor hot tub you will celebrate your dog sledding success with a gala dinner, followed by a visit to the bar!
Day 7 (Friday) Head Home:This morning (flight time dependent) you are free to enjoy your surroundings anyway you like, on snow mobiles or cross county snow skiing, or just relax at the ice hotel, the choice is yours.
