Kayaking is one of the most exciting, affordable and versatile watersports available. The sport covers a huge range of different disciplines such as exploring inland waterways, surfing breaking waves, negotiating white water, doing acrobatics (!), to competing in sprint and slalom events. Basically, when it comes to kayaking, the world is your oyster once you have the skills under your belt!
This two day course is nationally recognised training in both canoeing & kayaking. Moving on from the basics, the BCU two star courses takes paddlers to a level of competence on flat water. Performance at this level indicates a commitment to the sport and is often an entry requirement for canoe expeditions, white water training and sea kayaking courses. The emphasis of the course is on safe practice fun and enjoyment, as well as hard work, but it will definitely be worth it. The training is split over two days that covers progressive skills, equipment and safety. This course is a full training, those with the relevant prior experience may be assessed, however this is often done at a later date. Agenda
The criteria for the two star assessments are laid down by the British Canoe Union. The training will be delivered in an informal manner, with lots of opportunity to practice and experiment with various techniques and coaching methods. At the start of the course your coach will action plan out your time on the water, aiming to make the course as relevant as possible to you. You will cover; Theory & Safety Considerations, Equipment, Boat handling, Supports & braces, Rescues, Your next step.
By the end of the course you will have the skills to paddle kayak and canoes in all directions, prevent a capsize as well as being introduced to the Eskimo roll and have more thorough knowledge of paddling that will help you onto your three star course. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate of your qualification.
Restrictions
Experience of canoeing / kayaking to BCU one star standard or above.
Age requirements: Min age is 12
(Under 18's must have parental consent.)
All Participants must be confident in the water and fit enough to last two full days of activity.
Duration
This is a 2 day course, held over consecutive days.
What to Wear / Equipment
The centre will provide you with the kayak and wetsuit and buoyancy aid etc. You will need to bring a swimming costume and towel. Also, if it's hot take some sun block and if it's not take some warm clothes to change into afterwards. We recommend that all group members consider personal and equipment insurance.
Group Size / Spectators
There will be a maximum of 6 participants per instructor.

This course can be affected by the weather. If in doubt please contact the center before you set off for the day.
